Another important period so here is a new update for you about the cuttings! In case you missed the previous post, here you can read it. Lets ride!

This is the first week of May and the garden had a rough period. Temperature was above 25 Celsius for many days in a row and there was no rain. I had many things to do so I was 2 days late to take the cuttings out of the greenhouse. You will see, that made an impact.

Black currant cuttings doing well

They look way better after 3 days out in the garden in the shadows. Above 40 Celsius in a greenhouse does not help the currant cuttings to improve. I placed the cuttings next to the Japanese Silverberry (Autumn Olive) bush so they get direct sunlight only in the morning hours.

Leaves are showing that they want to go to soil soon

Elderberries success and failure

I have already mentioned that I admire and love elderberries. It has not changed since the last post 🙂 Strong and healthy looking cuttings are here but every coin has two sides. One of the compartments was closer to the side of the greenhouse so the young cuttings got more heat. The other one was safer distance and it looks fine.

For successful rooting the optimal temperature does not exceed 30 degres and there must be a wet, humid area. There must be an optimal balance between warm, wet and humid air and soil and airflow. Here is the example of too much heat 😦

Those withered cuttings will be removed

Figs are speeding

Cooler temperature and the shadows pushed fig cuttings to the limit! Buds started to grow and many leaves came out in a day. Thriving little wonders of Nature.

Fig heaven

Japanese silverberries starting slowly

I am sorry but normally I use both names of Japanese Silverberry and Autumn Olive (Elaeagnus umbellata) but I always think about this beautiful bush. I remove some of the dried cuttings already so you will see some empty spots. Apart from those the remaining ones getting stronger and greener, I hope the rooting percentage will be better than last year.

Week 9 summary

The last 14 days were really tough for the garden: too high daily temperatures and no rainwater at all. Unfortunately I could not take out the cuttings from the greenhouse on time, my bad. Dozen of the elderberry cuttings dried out but the rest look fine.
